A glimpse of tomorrow under the blazing sun. With a dedicated and nurtured spirit equipped for new educational challenges as another academic year opens in July, the maroon school kicks off another tempting event to attract freshmen.
In an effort to prepare incoming college freshmen and Grade 11 students for their academic journey ahead, Southwestern University PHINMA launched its inaugural Grand Freshmen Meet Up last Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the University Coliseum.
Commended amid the rising heat index in Cebu, the event provided a wide range of upskilling workshops and learning experiences that promote a sense of community participation and belonging.
PHINMA Education EVP and COO Cheryl Jane Chan highlighted in her welcome remarks SWU PHINMA’s dedication to holistic education and student empowerment for success in a dynamic world.
“…amidst [this] buzzling city is an institution, the school, which you will consider as a family,” Chan said.
“A family dedicated to nurturing your growth, inspiring your dreams, and empowering your journey towards excellence,” she added.
Moreover, Chan spoke of the institution’s vision of standing strong as the studentry’s pillar of support and partner in exploration, as they find comfort in knowing that each one brings something unique to the school and to the community itself.
The gathering proceeded with a mini fashion show featuring the departmental uniforms of each collegiate and high school department, followed by community games and a raffle draw.
PHINMA Scholars of the immediate batch, as well as fresh appointees of the administration were also introduced prior to the climax of the event—a performance by local band “Oh! Caraga,” igniting the Coliseum with cheers and applause from the Maroon crowd.
Among the highlights of the day-long chain of activities is the journalistic seminar and workshop spearheaded by The Quill’s Moderator, Miguel Lorenz Parawan, and a Design Thinking Workshop led by Sd+c student leaders Maria Andrea Alberastine and Jea Colipano.
Peter John A. Bacalso, an attendee and a Nursing freshman, expressed his enthusiasm towards the event, describing it as a festive jump-starter to their scholastic transition in a few months.
As the curtains draw on this celebration of commitment and academic excellence, whispers linger whether such an extravagant event is another distraction, veiling the institution’s challenges and reputation attacks.
