Something becomes harder to smash, especially if it is deemed to be a consistent feat.
Such was the case of reigning Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) badminton champion Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA Smashing Cobras when they kept their immaculate slate intact as they once again ruled this year’s badminton tournament held at the Metrosports Center, Lahug, Cebu City, last September 30, 2018.
The team reaped six golds, four silvers, and one bronze.
Smashing their way to yet another title were Joel Barriga (men’s individual), Android Tingson (women’s individual), Carl Bernard Bejasa (juniors boys A individual), Mike Marates (juniors boys B individual), Wileyto Yray and Bien Aloysios (juniors boys doubles), and the Boys Secondary Team.
Their prominence didn’t stop there as they dominated the newly concluded Cebu City Olympics 2018, hauling five golds, one silver, and two bronze medals.
Mary Kathleen Verallo and Zinah Bejasa outlasted all opponents to claim another championship in girls doubles, while Yray and Bien Miraflor successfully defeated challengers to bring home the title in boys doubles.
Carl Bernard Bejasa clutched a gold medal while Maratas settled for second in the boys singles.
Meanwhile, Verallo and Margaret Kim Jacalan managed to snatch bronze medals apiece in the girls singles.
In the elementary division, Baby Smashing Cobras Angelene Napoles Benemerito and Jeandhel Marie Belarde outlasted their opponents in the girls doubles, while Eve Emmanuelle Bejasa also topped in the girls singles.
