“The growth never ceases, and as time passes, the publication matures along with it.”
It has been 70 years since this certain ship left its port to sail across vast seas to serve the greater good. This ship was empty, all it had was the will to fight for freedom and spread information to the world.
But this ship couldn’t have set sail on its own. A captain was there to steer it to the right route, and it had a fair share of staff to manage its structure and protect it from the strong winds and gigantic waves that have constantly threatened its voyage.
Thereafter, that ship grew and became even stronger, now with passengers to keep it cruising. The people became its sail.
And because of the never-ending flicker of passion from these prominent people, the official student publication of Southwestern University PHINMA prides 70 shining years of quality news and unquestionable truth.
The growth never ceases, and as time passes, the publication matures along with it. Becoming more than just a student paper, The Quill opens up its pages to sociopolitical issues and to the vast and chaotic world of the web.
August 17, 2018 became one of the most important nights in the history of The Quill. Now a decennial affair, the heads of the University, student leaders, and representatives of student publications in the Metro graced its 70th anniversary with the theme: “Quill @ 70: Quality News, Unquestionable Truth.”
Patterned from the 60th anniversary where they recognized outstanding alumni members, The Quill honored a new set of captains and crews.
Worthy of an honor, the Outstanding Alumni Quiller is the highest award given to members whose passion, dedication, and excellence can bring forth inspiration to young and aspiring campus journalists who have fought for the preservation of rights and liberties of the campus press.
The new awardees are renowned gentlemen in the academe and journalism industry whose works and contributions are exemplary and impeccable.
In the field of journalism, SunStar Cebu writers Bong Wenceslao and Roger Cerna were awarded for their efforts in imparting knowledge to people through their articles.
SWU PHINMA’s very own General Services Department head, Pierre Infante, and prolific lawyer Atty. Jonah Villagonzalo were recognized for their contribution in the field of academe and law.
University of Cebu Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Palanca awardee Dr. Ulysses Aparece was also granted the award of excellence in literature and academics.
The awardees took a trip down memory lane as they spoke about their experiences as alumni of the school publication. They gave inspirational speeches for the future captains and crews of the ship to ponder upon. Their achievements are benchmarks for future Quillers to take on.
Also taking place in the affair was the relaunching of the official website of the publication, www.swuphinmaquill.com which, in part, fulfills its mission of becoming digitally dominant and becoming the premier student publication outside the country’s capital.
These navigators may have finished their terms as captains or crew members, but this ship will continue to surge above even the biggest waves in the ocean to deliver unquestionable truth aimed at changing the nation one article at a time.
And now, it’s time for the new captain and his crew to open the sails and holler.
